Open Ears and Eyes

The differences start as soon as you enter an international terminal. First, I LOVE having a passport. As a kid, I was fascinated with the pages of passports, the different national symbols and colors. I wanted a passport so bad I could taste it. So entering the international terminal is automatically exciting for me because it means TRAVEL.

As soon as you go in, you hear lots of other languages, and see people who just look different. It's the cut of their hair maybe, or their shoes — you've just never seen a pair like them in the States. The excitement of traveling is palpable as you go through security and wait for your flight.

I bought an inexpensive ticket with one caveat — it lands in Iceland half way through the journey. I think it's cool because I've never landed in Iceland, get a passport stamp, and a quick look at the landscape. Even cooler, it's Midnight when we land, but it's just sunset because of the Midnight Sun in the summers here. Very cool.

Not so cool is forgetting that yes, as soon as you get overseas, you'll need a charger adapter! Mine is in my suitcase, underneath the plane. So I've got to make my entries quickly, and wait until I land to power up and sync my photos.

At the airport, I just love looking around at all the different styles, trying to guess who's speaking what, and fighting off the exhaustion that will come around 2am, when I'm half way to France.

  1. p.s. I could not get "captioning" to work, but the last picture is of the Midnight sunset in Iceland. I've never flown so much in daylight.

  2. my first time in paris - I had to sit down and get coffee because I was so shocked. Did not hear one lick of English for a while. Freaked me out!
